Here are the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions!
How old do you have to be to volunteer at the Mission?
To volunteer in the kitchen and pantry you need to be 14 or older. Those 14 years of age and older can also volunteer at events such as our annual coat giveaway or race for volunteer hours for school or church requirements.
Anyone under 18 years of age needs to be accompanied by a parent/guardian.
How do I get started volunteering at the Mission?
The first step in volunteering is to attend a one hour volunteer orientation. This orientation includes a tour of the Mission, a testimony from a Mission resident and Q&A.
Are there opportunities for my group?
Yes! We welcome groups of all sizes! Learn more here.
Do you have parking?
There is metered street parking available throughout Morristown. Please note the time limits when choosing where to park! There is also parking available at the DeHart Parking Garage.
Our Thrift Store (located 25 George St, Morristown) has a free parking lot for use while volunteering at our Thrift Store. Please park toward the back of the lot to leave room for shoppers.
What should I wear?
Comfortable, casual, and modest is always appropriate. When volunteering in the Thrift Store, please be sure to wear closed toe shoes.
When volunteering in our Kitchen, please wear pants (no shorts, skirts, or dresses), closed toe shoes (no flip-flops or sandals). We will provide a hairnet, apron, and gloves.
Can I take pictures while I'm volunteering?
You are welcome to take pictures of your family or group while serving – we just ask that you do not photograph our residents or guests.
What should I do with my valuables while I volunteer?
Please do not bring your valuables to the Mission with you. We do not have secure storage for volunteers' personal items.
Is confidentiality important?
YES! Each volunteer has the responsibility to protect our clients’ rights to privacy. Therefore, client information is strictly confidential and may not be shared with any other person or agency other than Mission staff. Volunteers have the responsibility to use discretion in disclosing information about themselves to clients, including not discussing their personal problems.
Can I hug a client or give them my phone number?
Volunteers may participate with clients only as assigned by staff. Volunteers should not see clients outside of the Mission, visit during their work assignments, give their phone numbers or addresses without permission from staff, or connect with clients on Facebook or any other social media. This includes not driving clients in their cars or leaving the facility with a client.
Please do not touch or hug a client, even out of the best of intentions. Such actions may be misconstrued by the client and by client onlookers. This means honoring appropriate personal and professional boundaries.
Can I give someone a gift?
No. Please do not offer gifts, finances, or any other type of support to our clients. If you would like to contribute in this way please discuss with Debbie McKenna, Events and Volunteer Manager.
